Post "Sort Title" Function question
I really hate when movies are sorted by articles ("the", "a"), so I always have a sort title where these are removed. If I click on "All" movies, then my titles are sorted properly. So if I have the following:
The Great Race
The Gorgon
The Mummy
The Thin Man

I want them sorted as: Great Race, Gorgon, Mummy, Thin Man, which happens under "All". If I'm looking for a particular title, I will click on the letter of the first word after the article, since that is how I want them sorted (G,M,T in example). If I click on T, what I get is all of the titles that start with T, including all of the "The" titles, which ends up being a very long list. What should be a search through maybe 10 films is not over 50. I've checked to make sure the "Sort Title" is still selected while in the particular letter.

Is this a bug or is this a function of the program?

Please check the "Title sort" tab of the "Options" menu. Which items are your movies filtered by?

That got it to work properly. One question: I've been using the "sort movie list by" under the "Manage" menu. What is the difference between this feature and the one under "Options". Why when using the option under Manage does it only work with "All" movies and not under the individual letter listing? What would be the purpose of these two separate but similar functions?

Thanks!

As far as I know, there is no feature related to sorting under "Options". Please take into account that:
1. Sorting defines the order of movies, that is "A Good Year" will be shown before "Apocalypse Now", if the list is sorted by title, and the other way around otherwise.
2. Filtering defines which movies will be shown in the list when you press enable this or that filter. "A Good Year" will be listed together with "Apocalypse" now if you filter by title, but it will be shown after "Apocalypse now" according to the selected sorting option (that is, you can filter by title and sort by sort title).

I need a little more clarification. This may be because my experience is with real world filing and if something is filed (sorted) by ignoring the articles (the,a,et.al) as is listed in the Options menu [F10], then all other filtering is dependent on that sorting. When I apply a filter (such as by letter), the original (global) sorting should still apply. So the following titles sorted by full title:

A Great Game
A Ticklish Affair
Another Thin Man
Apocalypse Now
Austin Powers
The Abominable Snowman
The Thin Man
The Trouble with Harry
Them!

...with articles ignored, should be sorted as:

Title (sorted by)
Abominable Snowman (abominable)
Another Thin Man (another)
Apocalypse Now (apocalypse)
Austin Powers (austin)
A Great Game (great)
The Thin Man (thin)
A Ticklish Affair (ticklish)
TRON (tron)
The Trouble with Harry (trouble)

When I filter these by letter, the list should be:

under "A"
Abominable Snowman (abominable)
Another Thin Man (another)
Apocalypse Now (apocalypse)
Austin Powers (austin)

under "G"
A Great Game (great)

under "T"
Them! (them)
The Thin Man (thin)
A Ticklish Affair (ticklish)
TRON (tron)
The Trouble with Harry (trouble)

I don't get anything like this. I have been trying to manually create this type of list by putting the title without articles in the "Sort Title" in the entry, but it still doesn't produce organization like this. Is the program capable of doing this and how do I get it to do so?

Thanks

Could you please let us know what options are selected in:
1. Manage - Sort movie list by
2. Options - Title sort - Filter movies by?

If you have "Manage" - "Sort movie list by" set to "Title", then you will get this order in the program:
A Great Game
A Ticklish Affair
Another Thin Man
Apocalypse Now
Austin Powers
The Abominable Snowman
The Thin Man
The Trouble with Harry

Now, if you filter these by "Sort title" (no other boxes are checked), you will get the following order after pressing "A":

Another Thin Man
Apocalypse Now
Austin Powers
The Abominable Snowman

I've been trying a number of combinations, so I can't tell you which started all this, only that I was unaware of the "Options" menu and was just using the "Manage" drop down choices. Using the choices you just outlined and with the example, I still don't understand why it is in this order:

Another Thin Man
Apocalypse Now
Austin Powers
The Abominable Snowman

But not in this:

The Abominable Snowman
Another Thin Man
Apocalypse Now
Austin Powers

Does "sorting" mean alphabetizing? This is my understanding of "sorting" and if the articles are supposed to be ignored while sorting, the list should look like the second above. Even if there is some kind of programming issue for the Title and the word "the", I've manually removed the articles under the Sort Title, so if I use "Manage - Sort movie list by Sort Title", they should be listed like the second set, but they aren't. It's as if the program ignores the articles for certain functions (like which letter the movie should be listed under), but then uses it for alphabetization, regardless of the Sort Title or any other options. I'm expecting the article to be ignored no matter what. This may seem like nonsense for such a small example, but it is a nightmare to scroll through my large collection, especially in the "T" section where it appears that the alphabetization is done in chunks.

Thanks

Sorting your movie list by titles, you get the order that is completely correct, as the first letter of "The Abominable Snowman" is "T". If you sort your movie list by sort titles, you will get the other order, as the first letter of the sort title ("Abominable Snowman") is "A".

Post Re: "Sort Title" Function question
In my defense, when I tried to sort by "Sort Title", I was still getting the weird sorting involving the articles. Today when I started it up, it seems to be working properly. I'm happy now, I'm sorry it's taken so long and I know it looks like I'm a moron, but I'll take it so long as this is sorting the way I want. Later when I have time, maybe I'll play with the options again to see if I can recreate why it wouldn't sort this way before I sent my last missive.

Thanks for all of your help!
